We are two sisters who love our job as teachers…

I (Karen) have lived on Bainbridge Island for over 35 years. After growing up a family, I sold my big house, and my twin sister and I looked for a house where we could eventually have a preschool. A cozy house that also had a large, window-filled room just waiting to be turned into a creative space. A house with a big sunny backyard wanting a pizza garden, a mud kitchen, tree stumps, and some happy preschoolers running around. We found it, painted it purple, and not much later my sister (Katherine) started muckabout academy. Taking a brief respite to retool after COVID, we are ready to get going again by offering a Pop-up Preschool! I will be transferring from my much-loved kindergarten teaching job to hang out with preschoolers and I can’t wait! I still work one day a week teaching kindergarten at Blakely Elementary!

Credo

muckabout academy passionately believes that the nucleus of early childhood education is play. While the benefits of play boosting social-emotional growth are readily documented, the more recent connection between cognition and play busts opens a world of possibilities for early childhood education and muckabout is excited to be a part of that world.

muckabout is a media-free, scant-plastic, and screen-free habitat, believing that 3-D real-life is a requisite component of the preschool experience.

muckabout is adamant about developing the “whole child” and is firmly of the belief that there is no terrible weather, only terrible clothing. We believe children must be in nature daily and explore the wonder of wind, rain, heat, and seasons. Our play yard inspires exploration and improvisation.

muckabout will continue to remain ardently involved in the pursuit of educational enrichment for our preschoolers by adding pre-academics, music, movement, art, social studies, and science to the daily mix.

muckabout provides a wide variety of possibilities within a safe and dynamic setting.
